As if this business with Brett Kavanaugh couldn’t get any more farcical:
On Sunday, Deborah Ramirez, a Yale university classmate of the judge, told the New Yorker that Brett Kavanaugh had exposed his genitals at a dormitory party.
Ms Ramirez alleges the incident occurred when she was a freshman at Yale University alongside him during the 1983-84 academic year.
She says they were both taking part in a drinking game at a dormitory party where people sat in a circle and selected others to drink.
She says at one point a plastic penis was pointed in her direction by one man, and later another exposed himself directly.
“I remember a penis being in front of my face,” she said. “I knew that’s not what I wanted, even in that state of mind.”
It’s been obvious for several days that the Democrats had been wrong-footed by the GOP senators happily inviting Christine Blasey Ford to come and testify. This was never supposed to happen: the idea was they’d fold immediately and any due process would be conducted by the media. When Ford was asked to testify, they came up with increasingly bizarre excuses as to why she couldn’t, the latest one being that she is scared of confined spaces hence doesn’t like aeroplanes. Oddly, this didn’t stop her flying to Hawaii in the past.
With their plan unravelling and Ford risking perjuring herself before Kavanaugh’s nomination is scratched, the Dems had the weekend to put a Plan B in place. Step forward Deborah Ramirez:
The new accusation landed late Sunday in a report from The New Yorker, just a few hours after negotiators had reached an agreement to hold an extraordinary public hearing Thursday for Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, called for the “immediate postponement” of any further action on Kavanaugh’s nomination.
The New Yorker said it contacted Ramirez after learning of a possible incident with Kavanaugh. It said that the allegation came to the attention of Democratic senators through a civil rights lawyer. The Democrats then began investigating.
Remember, this is all about justice, not politics.
Ramirez was reluctant at first to speak publicly “partly because her memories contained gaps because she had been drinking at the time of the alleged incident,” The New Yorker reported. After “six days of carefully assessing her memories and consulting with her attorney, Ramirez said that she felt confident enough of her recollections” to speak publicly, the report said.
Carefully assessing her memories with her attorney? What does that involve, then? As commenter abacab points out, we’re basically into satanic-child-abuse-ritual-style territory here. Even if the GOP senators cave in and delay Kavanaugh’s confirmation, I reckon this is doing considerable damage to the Democrats. While the pink pussy hat brigade will still vote for them unflinchingly, ordinary people must be appalled by their behaviour over this. As several people have pointed out, if unfounded accusations of sexual assault dating back several decades can be used to take out anyone the progressives don’t like, how long before your husband, son, or brother is accused?
