This is from a Lib Dem MP:
My whole adult life very few people have claimed absolute ‘sovereignty’ is of greater importance than the economy. Now we are pursuing vague concept, regardless of economic/political cost.
— Tom Brake (@thomasbrake) December 4, 2017
Wasn’t the supremacy of sovereignty and self-government over economics and political stability the entire basis of the anti-colonial movement?
Should rename them the liberal (sort of) technocrats.
Democrats they not be!
Try as they might, they can never get away from the name “Limp Dumbs”
@Rob Harries
Name me one LibDem – or one MP would do – who know enough about technology to be called a technocrat (or indeed, enough about management to be able to manage even a small company, let alone an entire economy).
Someone should really sue the 3 main parties under the Trades Descriptions Act.
Trouble is, once the old colonial masters are thrown out, you have to get the economy and politics right unless you want to go cap in hand to the new colonial masters – the Russians and the Chinese.
It is a disingenuous statement. Sovereignty is not vague. The key question is what the balance is between ceding authority over certain areas (such as the regulation of cucumbers etc.), and the flexibility to modify our own laws to suit us. I don’t think anybody is banging on about ABSOLUTE sovereignty, but there is no conflict between controlling immigration to the UK, which is obviously an area where a great many people feel very strongly, and harmonised standards for cucumbers.
The EU and to a lesser extent the single market (EEA) are largely political projects and not economic. GDP (not to mention happiness) is much more strongly correlated with technology than with trade, at least for developed nations above a certain size. It is true, however, that there would be significant adjustment cost to the UK leaving the single market, but this is a one off cost, and if managed well leaving could be a j-curve event for the UK.
“Someone should really sue the 3 main parties under the Trades Descriptions Act.”
Indeed, the parties should be
Liberal party (formed of about 30 conservative MPs and 10 labour MPS)
Fascists (blue)
Fascists (red)
Fascists (Scottish)
Fascists (green)
One leads to the other in our case.

Heh! My post frequency all depends on what I find to write about!
Thud, Tim works in France. The rest of the office have probably gone home for Christmas already and Tim is just minding the store.

No doubt ensconced safely behind a row of hastily deployed concrete anti-vehicle barriers. It is Christmas, after all.
Yes, Daniel, another Brit blogger just made your point rather well:

Yes, and we saw how well that went in most places…
