Anger Stirrer Spitter

Is everyone equal before the law in modern Britain? Judge for yourselves:

A man who spat on the front door of a mosque twice in the space of a week has been sentenced.

Police said Graham Marshall, of Birkin Avenue, Hyson Green, Nottingham, was caught on CCTV spitting at the Jamia Islamia Mosque on 16 and 22 December.

The 70-year-old was found guilty of two counts of racially-aggravated criminal damage following a trial.

Marshall was given a one-year community order and fined £200 at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court.

I actually don’t think the sentence or fine is harsh: spitting on the door of a mosque is a pretty disgusting, anti-social, and unnecessary thing to do. I just wonder whether the police would be as interested if anyone spat on the door of a church, synagogue, or ordinary front door.

Insp Riz Khan, from Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Marshall showed a complete disregard for the faith and belief of others in these highly offensive incidents.

Inspector Riz Khan seems to think showing a disregard for the faith and belief of others is a punishable offence. Like it is in Pakistan.

“The force takes any incidents of this nature incredibly seriously and they will not be tolerated.”

Burglaries, on the other hand, probably will but I suspect that too depends on who’s been burgled.

  1. racially-aggravated criminal damage
Where is the racial element and where is the damage?

It’s nice to see the word “incredibly” used correctly.

So is smoking, but that does arguably more harm to others and it won’t get you a criminal sentence.

If there’s a bylaw against spitting in the street in Nottingham, then this is a £5 fine and a stern talking to. That the UK even has a crime called “racially-aggravated criminal damage”, much less that he was convicted of it, is a travesty to begin with.

  3. “Police said Graham Marshall … was caught on CCTV spitting …”

It is going to be great after Brexit, when the solons in Parliament can repeal all those EU regulations requiring CCTV cameras everywhere in the UK and highly-paid police officers sitting in comfy safe offices looking at TV screens instead of patrolling the streets. At least, I guess those are EU regulations; because surely elected British MPs would never look to China for inspiration on how to keep the peons in line?

  4. It’s taken me all day to work out the inspiration for the post title.

    I always hated cryptic crosswords.

  5. If you spit on a Christian church it’s called performance art and you get a grant.

Hyson Green, I should note, is a multi-cultural utopia and represents the best of modern Britain, and I highly recommend that everyone should visit. The only thing I’d say is, don’t buy a kebab there if you have a missing teenage daughter.

You don’t mix cocktails, I take it? 🙂

  7. One of these things is, apparently, not like the other:

Man spits in baby’s face and tells mother: ‘White people shouldn’t breed’ “……

Abdulla was found through CCTV footage. He has twice before been convicted of race-hate attacks made on white women.

….” The judge told the court Abdulla’s deteriorating mental health had contributed to his offence. He received psychiatric treatment after the attack between July and September last year, which has been continued since his release into the community.

    Makes you think….

  8. “Marshall was found guilty earlier this year but sentencing was adjourned for reports.”

Ah, ‘reports’. I wonder how much the taxpayer was fleeced for those?

    From another, fuller report:

“Jo Tait, defending, said…Marshall has problems with “anxiety and cognitive skills” and added: “He is really easily confused. He finds it very difficult to focus on any issue or point.”

The magistrates declined to impose an order barring him from Hubert Street, saying this was “not necessary nor proportionate.””

Looks like Riz Khan was reined in. This time.
