There are many pleasant reminders that the buildings of France – except in Normandy – escaped The War almost unscathed.
Did you know there was a town in Normandy, Mortain, that was badly knocked about in the fighting, and then finally razed (after the battle was won) by an American commander in a fit of pique?

I didn’t know that, but I did know that when the Americans utterly destroyed Saint-Lô when kicking the Germans out one of them remarked afterwards: “We sure liberated the hell out of this place.”
