  1. I would never have thought that Laurie Penny was up for drinking litres of beer and eating salty roast chicken. Nor would I have thought she would like to wear a dirndl. Oh, she didn’t do any of that? Why go to Oktoberfest? Why not look at a website or 2, that lets you know what is happening? Life is so hard for a SJW. How do they cope?

  2. Why go to Oktoberfest?

She was there as part of her book speaking tour. It was basically a form of humblebragging, for which she is well known.

  3. If AfD rank alongside Nazis in her pantheon of hate, then I really hope she gets to meet a proper Nazi mob, or even an old-style football crew

  4. And she should find out why Oktoberfest too.

Lager style beers can only be brewed below a certain temperature. Central Europe’s summers are above this temperature. Thus you cannot have lovely fresh beer in summer (and thus also abominations like Weissbier which doesn’t have the same problem). As the temperature drops up in the mountains in September then you can brew again.

And then the first brew of the autumn is rushed down to the plains and the Germans celebrate. It’s akin to a harvest festival – although about something more important, beer.

Of course, all of this has been moot since the 1840s or so with the invention of decent refrigeration and Pilsner style beers and so on but still…..

Sure, Laurie won’t care about a summer ith no beer but it would be an interesting insight for her into why she’s one of the most privileged people ever to have lived on the planet, wouldn’t it? You know, an illustration of the poverty of the past?

Interesting! I knew most German festivals were about beer, but I always assumed they were more celebrations of traditional harvests, not the beer itself.

  6. It’s like the wine pressing parties in remote Italian villages, or the tomato festivals in Spain. I guess it doesn’t happen for olives because the harvest is in January

  7. In Ms Penny’s world there would be no beer, no celebration, no fun. Only progress with a capital P. As in Pisspoor

  8. A weissbier, weisswurtz, and kartoffelsalad… My mouth is watering at the prospect. Bavarian weissbier is much better than the abominations you find in Austria and Czechia though

  9. “A weissbier, weisswurtz, and kartoffelsalad”

How very Bavarian. To design the sausage to go with the beer, not the beer with the sausage….

  10. Morsjon, the birds who can serve 3 litres in each hand would be overwhelming if they were topless. You’d get a black eye or something if those hooters started swaying

  11. If you ever get a chance to go to Munich for Oktoberfest, do it. It’s a fantastic experience.

  12. And it’s called “laager” because, to be made properly, it has to be stored (in a laager) so that it can mature.

  13. Wurst not Wurtz

The German word ‘Lager’ (n, m) is a store or depository and lager (in English) is a beer that absolutely doesn’t need to mature but can be kept for longish periods without deteriorating.

Weissbier is nice in the summer with a shot of raspberry though some go for Jägermeister instead.
