Russia's bad roads are famous worldwide, that's true, but the beach diversion is hilarious!

It was kind of you to play chess with the guard.

And oh my God, Gastello! You know (I am sure you do) that Gastello was the first Russian pilot-kamikaze? I just thought the name of the town is fitting... judged by the description you provided :)

[...] White Sun of the Desert writes about his recent Sakhalin travel: “The journey back entailed me having to do one of those things I’d always hoped I’d never have to do: enter a 4-berth Russian railway carriage which has 3 people sleeping in it already, and the spare bed is piled high with the others’ luggage, the space between the beds has a suitcase in it, and there is no sign of your own bedding.” Share This [...]

Varske, no insult was intended, it just struck me as a very Russian expression of a Russian characteristic; a characteristic, I guess, which helped them beat the Germans in WWII. Coming from the keyboard of our 'up and at 'em', western host, it struck me as amusing.

I think that quote was something I could really relate to. Not fatalism but more: just because it isn't done in the UK, doesn't mean it isn't perfectly sensible in Russia, given everything else that is different.

"it is wise to not worry about strange behaviour and better to just allow events to unfold"

Sounds as though you might have caught a severe dose of Russian fatalism!
