An MSc in Feminism

I’m currently researching Masters programmes in Human Resource Management (more on that later), and thought I’d check out what Manchester Business School had to offer. Regular readers may know that I studied at its sister institute, Manchester University, and was rather disappointed to find it had been wholly consumed by progressive virtue-signalling.

Here’s what I found describing part of an MSc in International Human Resource Management and Comparative Industrial Relations:

Do I really want to pay £11,000 for this? Not really; a subscription to Everyday Feminism is far cheaper, and I don’t need to leave my sofa.

I paid a third of that for a pretty decent vanity MA (in that it was “because it’s interesting, not because I need it” in a subject that at least had some real world relevance and what looks like considerably more academic rigor (love him or loathe him, everyone’s favourite dead Prussian did have a significant impact on international relations; similarly, Heuer literally wrote the book on the psychology of intelligence analysis).

    University of Portsmouth, likewise, do an MA in Naval History, likewise about four thousand pounds, distance learning / own time.

    But I suspect there’s a combination of distance learning / own time, and a primarily male audience, which leads to “fine, get to the point!… thank you, here’s two thousand words on the subject, what’s my mark?” rather than week-long tutorials about the superiority of the Nigerian sharing/mutual support economy over rapacious Western capitalism. When you’re doing this stuff on top of day job and home life you develop an interest in efficiency…

    Is this referring to Nigerian women in Nigeria? From what you’ve written Tim, it might be possible to interview all candidates personally.

    It certainly doesn’t seem like 11 grand’s worth?

    Anyway, what gives? Are your employers offering to fund further study? Or are they chucking you out with enough cash to fund some further study?

    Yeah- don’t start off saying that, and then not follow up. Especially if you then start telling us that a Masters in HR is a load of PC bullshit.

    This is a bit like “Well, I was banging Jennifer Lawrence the other day, AND I LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW AND SAW A DOG!”

    As a writer, you should know that you need to tell your audience the good bits and the good bits only.

  4. That’s because the student profile on that degree is something like 93% female, and they’ll choose their own dissertation topics. So assuming you could find a supervisor who would cover your area of interest you could do what you liked. I somehow get the feeling that you could tell a lot of the faculty a thing or two though.
    I’d hugely resent paying that for a degree, but I know needs must for some career changes. A PgDip might be cheaper.

    Yup. The problem is, it’s *massively* off-putting to any bloke who might want to learn something sensible about HR management. Imagine if the engineering prospectus was gender-biased in such a way?
