Technical Question

Technical question for my readers: can everyone access this blog okay, or do they get error messages or find the blog is down for some reason?

I’m hosted with one of the big American hosting companies, but I occasionally get emails from them saying my memory allocation has topped out. I’m not sure it’s related to visitor numbers though, and when they tell me to “fix it” they don’t actually tell me what the issue is, instead they helpfully invite me to purchase dedicated server space. I also use Cloudflare, which I have experienced a few problems with in the past.

One reader in the UK has told me he can’t get the site to load in the morning, but it works fine in the afternoon, which is odd. Do most people find the site loads okay, or do you have difficulties? Let me know and, if there’s a problem, I’ll try to get it fixed.

  1. UK – I can’t remember any problems, but I rarely look at the site in the morning so I could easily have missed even regular outages before noon.

  2. I’m in New Zealand and so (at the moment) 13 hours ahead of you. As I type this, it is 1-37PM here, 12-37AM in London so I’m likely on line when you lot are asleep and vice versa.

    I have not experienced any problems so that’s likely the reason. Might give you a hint.

  3. Works everywhere I have been except my office where it’s blocked for racist, xenophobic or sexist content. You must be doing something correct to get blocked at the home of groupthink.

  4. Thanks for the responses everyone, I’m happy to learn that for most people the site is accessibly most of the time without problems. What’s going on at poor AndrewWS’ end I don’t know, but I don’t think I can do much with the site that will help.

    Sorry about the Post Comment button being covered, too. All I can suggest right now is I get rid of the Live Preview feature, but I think people find it useful.

    Heh! I didn’t know anyone blocked me, except that ex-employer of mine! Must be a very sensitive blocking algorithm.

  6. I can’t find the commentPreview element in the CSS

    Wouldn’t worry too much about this. Just add an entry to your main CSS file (themes/twentyeleven/style.css)

    div#commentPreview {
    margin-top: 55px;
    }

    Or if you’d rather you kept that theme CSS file the same, add a new css file and add it to your page header

    link rel=’stylesheet’ href=’http://www.desertsun.co.uk/commentpreview.css’ type=’text/css’ media=’all’

    It doesn’t seem to work. :-/

  8. Ah, now it does! I put that code in the Additional CSS form in the built-in WordPress theme editor! Thanks a lot!

    Good stuff 🙂 You’re welcome

  10. Never had the site not load Tim, and I travel a lot so access it from many countries. Keep up the good work!
