Obama: wrong as usual

The BBC reports on Barack Obama’s reaction to the appalling church shooting in Charleston with the following title:

Charleston church shooting: Obama’s ‘hopeless’ push for gun control

Why might it be hopeless?  Well, let’s look at what Obama said:

“At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries,”

Which is flat-out wrong, and unless Obama is spectacularly tin-eared, is a whopping great lie.  In July 2011, Norwegian Anders Breivik killed 77 people in an attack inspired, in part at least, by racial hatred 67 of which were shot.  More recently, we had the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris in which gunmen murdered 12 people and wounded 11 others.

Regardless of whether you think increased gun controls in the US are desirable, it is hardly surprising that a “push” which starts off with a ludicrously false claim is “hopeless”.  But the way the BBC presents it, it is only the unreasonable stubbornness of conservative gun-nuts which are preventing Obama from ending such shootings permanently.

  1. My view on gun control might be different if I’d just lost a loved one to a psychotic shooter, but currently it can be summarised as;

    1. I don’t believe those with malicious intent will pay any attention to gun laws.
    2. There are loads of guns already out there and they are non-biodegradable.
    3. Nobody with a gun in their hand ever got on to a cattle truck heading to a concentration camp.

  2. Just locally in Oz:

On 9 August 1987, in Hoddle Street, Clifton Hill, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Julian Knight shot and killed seven people and serious injury to 19 others.
On 8 December 1987 at the Australia Post offices at 191 Queen Street in Melbourne, Victoria, Frank Vitkovic gunned down eight fellow workers and injured five others before taking a long drop off a short 11th floor ledge.
On Sunday 28th April 1996 it is alleged Martin Bryant shot and killed 35 people and injured 20 others at Port Arthur in the State of Tasmania.

You’re right, Mr Obama, nothing to see here. These thinks only happen in the those 57 states of America you visited on your campaign trail.

  3. If someone in Port Arthur was legally carrying a gun when Martin Bryant went berserk, what would the final body count have been?

  4. There sort of was. When Bryant had run out of people to shoot in the cafe, and the carpark, and had moved up to the toll booths on the entrance road to shoot the ticket staff, the service station just up the road saw what was happening, however due to Tasmania’s strict gun storage laws, they didn’t have time to get their gun, ammo, bolt, etc out of all the different storages, before Bryant got to their place & started shooting people there also.

Watching this on TV from way overseas, I imagined this would lead to the Australian population being allowed to arm themselves. It never entered my head that the conservative parties would alienate a generation of voters by taking their legal guns.

Notable point: Every conservative state govt. that enacted gun control legislation was voted out at the soonest election opportunity. Some of them did not reelect a conservative govt. for 15 years or more.

  5. The biggest mass murders in the US have been committed with explosives, and with petrol.

All discussion of gun control in the US seems to me to start from two unstated but ludicrous assumptions: (i) You can magic away all the existing guns and start from a tabula rasa, and (ii) You can stop illegal import of guns.

  6. And the biggest mass murder of Americans outside the US that I can think of – the horror at Jonestown – was committed with poison.

  7. On American exceptionalism: I’m trying to think of any episode in recent (post 1950) British, French, German or Italian history that compares with the slaughter by government forces at Waco. Maybe the slaughter of Algerians in Paris back at about the time of the Algerian war of independence?

  8. Obama is equivocating fairly hard here. He’s testing the water to see if a “let’s ban guns” narrative is going to start up.
    This will not happen.
After Sandy Hook (mass murder inside yet another “gun free” zone) Obama came out swinging with “ban guns” talk.
Very quickly he adjusted his story.

Photos appeared of him firing a shotgun, in the manner of family snaps that just happened to be taken the weekend before (even though he barely knew how to hold one, & likely has little idea which end the scary ballistic stuff comes out of).
It turned out Obama was a keen sporting shooter type of guy, blah blah blah.

That he even felt the need to speak such words, and appear in such press release photos, tell you all you need to know about the chances of gun control getting up in the USA.

Notwithstanding that gun control in the USA would be nothing more than shutting the stable door after the steed has well & truly bolted.

Heck, they can’t stop PEOPLE coming across the border from Mexico, they’ve no chance with guns. (As TNA says above, guns are non-biodegradable)

You can buy “drugs” daily on street corners in the USA.
You only gotta buy a gun once, & ammo every now & again.

Going to be a whole lot of “cold dead hands” having to be prised open for the USA to implement gun control. (Never mind the redneck hillbilly terbaccy chawin’ flyover states, the most difficult part will be emptying guns from the ghettos – good luck Mr. Dreamy Bambi President)

  9. There’s also the hypocrisy. Mr Bloomberg wants gun control. Mr Bloomberg has arranged that he is himself guarded by armed men at all times. Twat!

  10. “The biggest mass murders in the US have been committed with explosives, and with petrol.” Unless you count 9/11, which was done with airliners and jet fuel; but I don’t imagine that we’re considering acts of war.

  11. In my experience they already do, and have done since…forever.
It may not happen in places full of lettuce-munching types (California) but I’ll guarantee that on most South Carolina beaches there’s a pistol inside at least one girl’s purse, possibly half the beach is packing (if they’re locals).

    Has always been so.
